Margherita Malerba — short films, documentaries and archive projects

If one holds the eye of a living animal up to a lit candle, its image will be seen precisely at the back of the eye; if the eyeball is moved, the image becomes blurred. If, while reading, one places a wide-mesh veil between the eyes and the book and continues reading, the veil will appear blurred; but if one tries to focus on the veil, the letters will appear extremely blurred. One can focus alternately on the veil and the letters; on both at once, never.
Here: the eye rolls, stops, receives; and nothing it receives belongs to it. Each point of the image corresponds to a point of the object. But if the object draws near, each point forms a circle of diffusion, and the image becomes indistinct. In states of exhaustion, of inanition, of weakness, of convalescence, the eye cannot accommodate for long.
